Raquel's three year family movement caused her to attend three different high schools. This made her lose opportunities in friendships and made her unable to identify and bond with current students at her school. She expressed that she does not like the current students at her school because she feels excluded, as is she was an outsider looking in.
She also dislikes her teachers at her high school and in her words says “the teachers are rude and stupid” When asked to elaborate she gives the reason of feeling as if teachers do not teach, instead they get through their lesson plans with disregard to whether students have grasped the concept being taught. She goes on to explain, that not only do the students feel they are not being helped but they do not know what to study for prior to the exams. She adds, that when the students do not perform well on the exams the teachers will criticize them for their low performance and for not being prepared.
Her favorite subjects are Geometry and Chemistry and least favorites are Algebra and Biology. To her, learning is an all or nothing experience. She either gets the subject matter and excels or does not get the subject matter and fails
The thing she likes most about school is her study hall. The reason she likes study hall is that there is a teacher there that helps her with her work in various subjects. It is the only time or place where she feels there is genuine concern for her academic well being due to this teachers caring nature.
What she dislikes is the students, teachers and principle. She also says that she does not feel safe. She gives an example of an incident where there were bomb threats made to her school. She cites the principle's mishandling of this, saying the principle lied to the parents saying the school would be on lock down and it never was.
Raquel, currently has low confidence is in her academic abilities and does not have any clear future aspirations on academic degrees or career pursuits. If she could change something about school it would be for students to be more accepting and willing to befriend other students. Also, she wishes classes were more fun. Classes are boring and because of this "it makes me not want to learn”. She goes on to say: “School is a prison that you have to go to everyday.”
